Not Proved: Reply to Wynn

چکیده

A complete survey of the published data reveals that the pattern of results (“successes” and “failures”) of attempted replications and variations of Wynn (1992) is neither as positive and robust nor as well tested as Wynn (2000) claims. The findings are inconsistent within and across studies using Wynn’s original addition and subtraction conditions as well as those using similar procedures but with variant conditions. Infants have been tested on their discriminative looking at incorrect versus correct results when imprecise addition and subtraction is sufficient, when precise addition and subtraction may be necessary, and when only imprecise addition and subtraction in variant conditions is sufficient. Accordingly, we will first outline the published data on these three kinds of experiments before considering Wynn’s (2000) procedural contentions.

Findings of addition and subtraction in infants are robust and consistent: reply to Wakeley, Rivera, and Langer.

Findings showing numerical computation abilities in infants are considerably more robust and consistent than Wakeley, Rivera, and Langer suggest. All the interim replication attempts have successfully replicated my original findings. Possible reasons for Wakeley et al.'s failure to replicate are discussed.

Transfer from action to perception: The effect of motor-perceptual enrichment

This study investigated the effect of audiovisual integration on action-perception transfer.40 subjects were randomly divided four groups: visual, visual-auditory, control visual and control visual-auditory. Visual groups watched pattern skilled basketball player and other groups in addition to watching pattern skilled basketball player, heard Elbow angular velocity as sonification. In first st...

Circularity in Searle’s Social Ontology: With a Hegelian Reply

John Searle’s theory of social ontology posits that there are indispensable normative components in the linguistic apparatuses termed status functions, collective intentionality, and collective recognition, all of which, he argues, make the social world. In this paper, I argue that these building blocks of Searle’s social ontology are caught in a petitio of constitutive circularity. Mo...

Α-admissibility of the Right-shift Semigroup on L(r+)

It is shown that the right shift semigroup on L(R+) does not satisfy the weighted Weiss conjecture for α ∈ (0, 1). In other words, αadmissibility of scalar valued observation operators cannot always be characterised by a simple resolvent growth condition. This result is in contrast to the unweighted case, where 0-admissibility can be characterised by a simple growth bound. The result is proved ...
